Die Kalahari (auch Kgalagadi) ist eine Dornstrauchsavanne, teilweise auch Trockensavanne, wird aber gelegentlich wegen des vorherrschenden Sandes als Wüste bezeichnet. Sie erstreckt sich beidseitig des südlichen Wendekreises von der südafrikanischen Provinz Nordkap durch Namibia und Botswana über eine Fläche von über einer Million Quadratkilometern. Sie ist Teil des etwa doppelt so großen Kalahari-Beckens, das sich bis nach Angola und Sambia hinein erstreckt.
