Dresden ist die Landeshauptstadt des Freistaates Sachsen. Mit rund 557.000 Einwohnern (November 2019) ist Dresden, nach Leipzig, die zweitgrößte sächsische Kommune und die zwölftgrößte Stadt Deutschlands. International bekannt ist Dresden als eine Kulturstadt mit zahlreichen bedeutenden Bauwerken wie dem barocken Zwinger, herausragenden Museen wie der Gemäldegalerie Alter Meister und berühmten Klangkörpern wie der Sächsischen Staatskapelle oder dem Kreuzchor. Die Dresdner Altstadt wurde in großen Teilen rekonstruiert und durch verschiedene architektonische Epochen geprägt, neben dem Zwinger beispielsweise mit der Frauenkirche am Neumarkt, der Semperoper und der Hofkirche sowie dem Residenzschloss. Der 1434 begründete Striezelmarkt ist einer der ältesten und bekanntesten Weihnachtsmärkte Deutschlands. Dresden wird auch Elbflorenz genannt, ursprünglich vor allem wegen seiner Kunstsammlungen; maßgeblich trug dazu sowohl seine barocke und mediterran geprägte Architektur als auch seine malerische und klimatisch begünstigte Lage im Elbtal bei.

Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony and its second most populous city, following only Leipzig. It is the 12th most populous city of Germany, the fourth largest by area (following only Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne), and the third most populous city in the area of former East Germany, following only (East) Berlin and Leipzig. Dresden is contiguous with Freital, Pirna, Radebeul, Meissen and Coswig, and its urban area has around 780,000 inhabitants, making it the largest in Saxony. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city centre. The controversial American and British bombing of Dresden in World War II towards the end of the war killed approximately 25,000 people, many of whom were civilians, and destroyed the entire city centre. After the war restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Zwinger and the Semper Oper.
